What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia is a health condition wherein there is an increase in the size of male breasts, usually because of hormonal imbalance (Estrogen & Testosterone). Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts. This condition may be embarrassing for men and also lead to mental discomfort. Breast enlargement due to Gynecomastia usually does not respond to exercise. In cases of moderate or severe male breast enlargement, surgery may be the only option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gynecomastia and how is it different from chest fat
  • Gynecomastia: Involves the presence of firm, rubbery glandular tissue under the nipple-areola complex. This tissue cannot be reduced through diet or exercise.
  • Gynecomastia can be due various factors commonly being puberty changes, aging, anabolic steriods, drugs, medical conditions such as hypothroidism, liver and kidney diseases.
  • In gynecomastia surgery, various steps are done to contour the chest region to create a flatter chest region. Steps involves:

    1. Liposuction : A through liposuction of chest region is done to remove fat cells for a flatter chest. We do a Power Liposuction for better contour definition of chest.

    2. Excision of gland: Enlarged gland is removed from a small incision at a camouflaged area.

    Recovery Process:

The recovery period typically ranges from 3 to 5 weeks, though individual healing times can vary.

    • Immediately After Surgery (First 2-3 Days): You will experience mild pain, soreness, bruising, and swelling. A compression garment will be applied to help reduce swelling and support the healing tissues. Patient can follow their daily activities from Day 1 and usually patients return to work after 48 hours.
    • 1-2 Weeks Post-Surgery: Pain and discomfort should significantly decrease. You will continue to wear the compression garment. Strenuous activities and heavy lifting must be avoided. However, you can do running, jogging and lower body excercises.
    • 3-4 Weeks Post-Surgery: You can now start upper body excercises with gradual wieght increase. You should continue to wear pressure garment.

Important Recovery Tips: Always follow your surgeon’s specific post-operative instructions, wear your compression garment diligently, avoid strenuous activities too soon, and attend all follow-up appointments.

  • As there is total excision of gland, gland enlargement cannot occur again. We encourage to maintain a healthy lifestyle and adequate weight control so that the chest has good and long lasting contour.
